Build a Niche Store Picking a domain name! Build a Niche Store: Researching your Niche online

Below i’ve taken a small piece from marks blog, i found this to really help me when i was searching for my niches for the first time.

Extract taken from Marks Blog

One of my favorite parts on Marks blog in this series is his research section, found here. I especially likes his exercise for discovering a niche, i didn’t think of it this way when i was considering my niche, i was looking more into the technical side of it, which i’ll cover later.

So… how do you discover a Niche Market? First… start with a pen and paper (pencils are OK). Write down 10-20 things in your home, apartment, car, or just in general… that need to be repaired or replaced! For me, starting with the walk up the driveway:

  1. My Mailbox is Broken (not bad… but its one of those things I know exists)
  2. My Boots are getting worn out
  3. The Lawn needs to be cut, wonder how the mower is doing? (Yes, its 70 degrees in NC right now)
  4. I need a storage bin for outside stuff like yard tools etc
  5. There are leaves on the ground everywhere, grab the blower.
(Can you tell I dont like yardwork yet?)
  6. As I pass my car I remember I just bought a radar detector(Beltronics Vector 995 for those who may ask)
  7. Hmmm how many times have we talked about yard lights along the driveway?
  8. I wont tell the story - but I just had to put a set of tires on a car with 3000 miles also!
  9. The front door handle is a bit loose and old
(As I walk in, I scan the room)
  10. I remember the Gas Logs in the fireplace had a funny odor this year - they must be old
  11. Hey - I just bought that fireplace mantle- on eBay even! (Yes, I clicked one of my aff sites first :-) )
  12. We are talking about taking out a wall between the main room and the kitchen, but I need some extra tools for that.
  13. Just replaced the range hood over the oven(bought on eBay)

END of Extract

So you can just look around your house, see what you need and chances are other people are going to need the same things.

That is one way to look for a niche, read my next post for a more technical approach to researching/finding your niche, and  if you have already found a few you like, we will use your niches and see if there is a market out there for them.
